14 “Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord! 15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24: 14-15
Joshua who was in the final chapter of his life was addressing the nation of Israel. He had been given the assignment of leading his people to and settling them in the Promise Land. In the above Scripture reading, he was reminding them about the faithfulness of God and challenged them to keep being committed in their walk with the Lord. (Read from Joshua 24: verse 11-15)
Let’s look at why it was important for Joshua to ensure that He, as well as his House, was walking in God’s counsel.
In the beginning, God created Adam and blessed him with his wife, Eve, and later, he blessed them with children. The family unit was established. Since then, God has been using the family unit to fulfil His counsel and purpose in His Church. He still does!
Since the family unit was established before the Church, it is imperative for us to understand that the Christian home (or family unit) is very important to God. He demands that the home be a foundation for Worship, Godly leadership and building on His Word. However, for God to transform a home, He will begin with each of the individuals in that home.
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. Deuteronomy 6:4-9
There is a demand and responsibility for every one of us to establish our homes under Godly leadership. God commands that His Word and counsel be the priority both in our individual lives and home. When we do this, He promises to be our God.
16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God and they shall be My people.” 2 Corinthians 6:16 (NKJV)
“As for me and my House…..” How do I go about it?
- Welcome and honor God’s Presence in your life and home.
- Commit to walking with God and make pleasing Him your ultimate priority. Serving God is not necessarily attending Church and quoting Scripture alone, it involves living out your faith.
“As for me and my House…..” Can you speak for your House?
